30 Questions to Ask Before Marriage in Islam

22 May 2026 - 7 min read - The KeepItHalal Team

The right questions, asked early, prevent the wrong marriage. Here is a faith-first list to work through before you commit.

The biggest decision after Islam itself is who you marry. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged us to look at deen and character first, then everything else. These questions are designed to surface both - quickly, kindly, and without games.

Deen and practice

  • How would you describe your relationship with Allah right now?
  • How consistent are you with the five daily prayers?
  • What role does the Qur'an play in your daily life?
  • Which scholars or teachers do you learn from?
  • How do you want Islam to shape our future home?

Family and roles

  • What is your relationship with your parents like?
  • How involved will our families be after marriage?
  • What are your expectations of a husband or wife?
  • How do you see household responsibilities being shared?
  • Do you want children, and if so, when and how many?

Finances and lifestyle

  • How do you handle money, debt, and saving?
  • Is your income halal, and are you intentional about zakat?
  • Where do you want to live in the next five years?
  • How do you feel about working after marriage or after children?
  • What does a normal week look like for you?

Character and conflict

  • How do you behave when you are angry or stressed?
  • Who do you go to for advice when something is hard?
  • Tell me about a time you were wrong - how did you handle it?
  • What does forgiveness look like to you?
  • Have you been in serious relationships before, and what did you learn?

Future and red lines

  • What are your non-negotiables?
  • What would make you walk away from this marriage?
  • How would we raise our children Islamically?
  • What does success look like to you 10 years from now?
  • What scares you most about getting married?

Ask these over multiple conversations, ideally with a Wali present. Honest answers - even uncomfortable ones - are a gift.
